For many, a 90 degree afternoon can seem too hot for a Sunday afternoon walk in Florida. But for my sister and I, a light breeze, low humidity, and the shade of majestic oaks, convinced us that an afternoon stroll was doable. And because we’d had little time to chat during her visit to see me and my parents in our hometown of Tallahassee, time alone seemed a necessity.

So, we headed to Alfred B. Maclay State Gardens. Maclay Gardens is a 1,176-acre Florida State Park, botanical garden and historic site, located in Tallahassee, in northwestern Florida. Wandering around the brick lined paths, with an amazing array of birds skittering around nearby, and the waters of Lake Hall glistening a few feet away, it became easy to understand why Alfred B. and Louise Maclay chose to make this their winter home in 1923. And it became clear, that our choice for a walking spot, had been the right one.

Even in the heat of the day, the amazing oaks that fill this part of Florida, made the entire place seem pleasant, with a kind of a secret garden, hideaway feel. In fact, there is a secret garden in the park, a reflecting pond, and a gardener’s cottage that is used for weddings and events.

But it was the non-man made parts of the Gardens; the lush vegetation, the cool waters, and the wildlife, that made this the perfect setting for a sisterly chat – there was so much we had to share – and a welcome getaway, from a noisy world.
